Hair Care Tips for Silver and Gray Locks

There are two ways to get silver or gray hair: it grows in naturally, or you get it colored at a salon. Either way, your hair is different from before. It’s no longer the same texture of younger years, or it’s more delicate than before the color treatments. You have to use hairstylist-approved methods to maintain the look of your locks and style your hair to perfection.

Handling the Texture and Porosity

Whether it’s natural or color-treated, the texture, porosity, and tone of your hair change. You may need to use a texturizing spray for hair volume to give your locks some lift and let them have some fun. Instead of scrunching, flip your dry hair over and spray the roots and bottom layers about 8-10 inches from your head. If you have curly hair, use curl definers to add more definition and reduce fizziness.

Add some shine: Use a clear, argan-infused oil formulated for fair strands to help add shine and fight frizz.

Keeping Your Silver and Gray Hair Bright

Like blonde hair, silver and gray hair can take on warmer tones, making the strands appear yellow or orange. It may also look less shiny and soft. To keep your hair bright and soft, it’s important to help maintain its tone and texture with toning and non-toning purple shampoo and conditioner for gray hair. Toning purple shampoo can bring out the brightness and cool tones in your hair weekly, while the non-toning conditioner gently nourishes the strands afterward. It’s the ideal combo for bright, healthy-looking locks. On no-tone wash days simply sub in a non-toning shampoo for your fair strands.

Turning to Treatments to Nourish Your Locks

If you want to give your hair some extra nourishment, consider a hair treatment. There are toning treatments to help repair and condition, and recovery treatments for hair that feels dry and damaged. These are perfect for coarse textures or hair damaged by repeated bleaching.

With the right hair care products, including color-safe texturizer, toning and non-toning shampoos, and no-tone conditioner, you can help your gray and silver hair look smooth, soft, bouncy, and healthy.
